The short answer: in the Members Enclosure (which includes the Birdcage) and in corporate hospitality, men need a jacket, collared shirt, tie and dress shoes. General public areas have no dress rules.
That covers entry. Each Melbourne Cup Carnival day also has its own fashion tradition, from black and white on Derby Day to bright colour on Cup Day. Below you will find the rules by enclosure, then what we would wear to each Flemington meeting this spring.

Start with your enclosure
The dress code follows the area you enter, rather than membership status alone. A guest in the Members Enclosure must meet its standards; a non-member in corporate hospitality may also need formal attire.
Members Enclosure, the Birdcage and guests
The Birdcage is part of the Members Enclosure, so the same rules apply, as they do in the Club Stand, Grandstand and Members Lawn. Gentlemen need a suit jacket, sports coat or blazer, a collared dress shirt, a tie or bow tie and dress shoes. Wear tailored trousers; the VRC also accepts tailored chinos, tailored leather pants and tailored shorts on or below the knee.
Not accepted: denim and jeans, untailored or cargo pants, shorts above the knee, runners, sandals and thongs, open-neck shirts, pullovers or cardigans without a jacket, cravats, safari suits, waist-length or bomber jackets, parkas, windbreakers, denim jackets, casual leather jackets, peaked caps and beanies. Trousers must not be tucked into socks or footwear. The VRC has no sock rule. These standards apply to guests as well as members. The December to March summer jacket relaxation does not cover these spring dates.
General public areas
The VRC sets no dress regulations for general public ticket holders. A jacket and tie are optional and may still be worn. The absence of a requirement is not a ban on tailoring.
Corporate hospitality and dining
The VRC requires gentlemen to wear a jacket, tie and dress shoes with tailored trousers or permitted tailored shorts. A non-member hospitality ticket can therefore carry formal dress requirements. Check the conditions of your particular booking or invitation.

Flemington race days: what to wear
All dates below are in 2026. The colour themes are fashion traditions; the looks pictured are styled from Raoul of Brighton stock. They do not replace the dress regulations for your enclosure.
Cox Plate Day, Saturday 24 October
Styled from our range: Loc wears a Navy Canali Suit, Pink Eton Shirt, Canali Silk Tie, Ascot Pocket Square and Tie Bar.
Navy or grey tailoring, a crisp shirt and a restrained patterned tie. The Cox Plate is at Flemington in 2026 while Moonee Valley is redeveloped.
Derby Day (Howden Victoria Derby Day), Saturday 31 October
Styled from our range: Benjamin (left) wears a Black Canali Classic Wool Suit ($2,995), Eton Shirt, Canali Silk Tie and Ascot Pocket Square. Jerome (right) wears a Black Rembrandt Linen Jacket ($695), Eton Bengal Stripe Oxford Shirt, Canali Silk Tie, Brax Chinos, Ascot Pocket Square and a cornflower in the lapel.
Charcoal tailoring, a white shirt and a black tie. A white pocket square keeps the finish clean. Black and white is the day's signature fashion tradition; a morning suit is encouraged, rather than mandatory. The day’s flower is the cornflower, and a cornflower in the lapel is a simple nod to it.
Melbourne Cup Day (Lexus Melbourne Cup Day), Tuesday 3 November
Styled from our range: Loc wears a Blue Canali Silk Blend Sports Jacket ($2,795), Eton Banker Collar Signature Twill Shirt, Canali Silk Tie, Yellow Ascot Pocket Square and Brax Trousers.
The VRC encourages bright, bold colour on Cup Day. A blue jacket with pale pink shirting is the quiet way to do it: a patterned tie or pocket square becomes the focal point, and the other pieces stay calm. A yellow pocket square picks up the day’s flower, the yellow rose.
For something bolder, keep the suit navy and put the colour in the tie and pocket square. Pick one strong colour and repeat it once, rather than adding several.
Oaks Day (Crown Oaks Day), Thursday 5 November
Styled from our range: Sal wears a Canali Blue Check Suit ($3,195), Eton Banker Collar Signature Twill Shirt, Canali Silk Tie and Ascot Pocket Square.
Pale blue, pink and lilac work beautifully with navy. Our approach for men is a soft-coloured shirt, a silk tie and a well-cut jacket. These are styling suggestions, not extra entry requirements. The day’s flower is the pink rose.
Champions Stakes Day (TAB Champions Stakes Day), Saturday 7 November
Styled from our range: Ted wears a Blue Canali Silk Blend Sports Jacket ($2,795), Red Canali Silk Tie, Eton Contrast Collar Striped Shirt, Brax Hi-Flex Trousers and Red Ascot Pocket Square.
The VRC calls it a garden party: relaxed but stylish, with playful patterns, textures and easy-to-wear tailoring. A red tie or pocket square nods to the day’s flower, the red poppy. The day’s mood does not remove the jacket and neckwear requirements in areas where they apply.
The finishing details
Try on the complete outfit before race day. Check the shoulder line, collar and trouser length, then sit and walk in it. Polish your dress shoes and choose a pair you already find comfortable. Check the forecast and consider the weight of your tailoring for a full day at the course.
Your tie and pocket square can share a colour without matching exactly. With a patterned jacket, a plain shirt gives the outfit balance. If the shirt is striped, a small, patterned tie can work well when the patterns differ in scale.

Flemington dressing questions
Do I need a jacket and tie at Flemington?
Yes, if you are entering the Members Enclosure, which includes the Birdcage. Corporate hospitality and dining also require a jacket and tie. General public areas have no dress regulations.
What is the dress code for the Birdcage?
The VRC treats the Birdcage as part of the Members Enclosure, so the Members rules apply: a suit or sports coat or blazer, collared dress shirt, tie or bow tie, tailored trousers and dress shoes.
Are jackets and ties banned in general admission?
No. The VRC sets no dress regulations for general public areas and encourages racewear. You can wear a suit or tailored separates.
Can I go without a tie in the Members Enclosure?
No. A tie or bow tie is required in the Members Enclosure, and in corporate hospitality.
Can I wear shorts, chinos or jeans?
In Members and corporate areas, tailored chinos are accepted and tailored shorts are accepted on or below the knee. Denim and jeans are not allowed in the Members Enclosure.
What shoes and socks should I wear?
Dress shoes are required in Members and corporate areas. Runners, sports shoes, sandals, thongs and slippers are not allowed. The VRC has no sock rule, but trousers must not be tucked into socks or footwear.
Must I wear black and white on Derby Day?
It is the tradition for the day, and a morning suit is encouraged. Your enclosure's dress regulations decide entry, not the colour theme.
Can I wear the same suit to several race days?
Yes. Changing the shirt, tie or pocket square gives the same suit a different look.
Dress rules checked against the VRC website on 16 October 2026. See the VRC's current dress guidance and your booking conditions before attending.
